Usually, the fifth and sixth spot in the Premier League is enough to send you through, automatically, to the group stages of the following seasons Europa League. Seventh place in the league has to go through a rigorous qualification process. If you are victorious in the FA Cup, you will be awarded an automatic spot in the group stages of the Europa League. It was also thought that this would incentivise the prospect of winning the FA Cup in a bid to try to get teams to play their strongest XI and treat the competition with more respect. Not only does this rob the chance of European football from the side who have deservingly finished seventh though, but it also means the sixth best team has to go through that early starting qualification. If the winners of the FA Cup already occupy one of the six confirmed places in European competitions, then the seventh place in the Premier League will qualify instead.

By Ollie Lewis For Mailonline. The Europa League group stage reaches its conclusion on Thursday night with plenty yet to be decided with one game remaining. While Manchester United , Wolves and Celtic are already through to the knockout rounds, Arsenal and Rangers still need a result to secure qualification. Here's your essential guide to all the permutations across the 12 groups. In the latter stages of Unai Emery's downfall at Arsenal, it was the Europa League where Gooners fans could find respite from disappointing results in the Premier League.

Emery has developed a reputation for being a master of this competition, guiding Sevilla to three triumphs as well as taking Arsenal to the final in Baku last season. But the embarrassing defeat to Frankfurt a fortnight ago was the straw that broke the camel's back for Emery's tenure in north London, and Arsenal still have work to do if they want to qualify for the knockout stages.

Arsenal need a single point to seal qualification from Group F when they face Standard Liege. Freddie Ljungberg will be in the dugout in Belgium following Unai Emery's dismissal. It shouldn't be all too difficult, though. Arsenal need a win or a draw away to Standard Liege, who they thumped in the reverse fixture earlier in the competition.

Alternatively, a Frankfurt loss to Vitoria will send them through. However, if Arsenal lose by five and Frankfurt win, the Gunners will be sent crashing out of the competition in what would be a remarkable turnout. Fixtures: Standard Liege v Arsenal 5. Arsenal need just a point to go through but a highly unlikely set of results could see them exit. Rangers have performed strongly in a tough group to put them on the verge of qualification. Before the group stage kicked off, many felt Steven Gerrard's side were facing an uphill task to get the better of Porto, Feyenoord and Young Boys.

But the Gers have more than held their own, taking four points each off Porto and Feyenoord, placing them in pole position to qualify as group winners. Rangers have performed strongly to put them in pole position to get out of Group G. Wins over Porto and Feyenoord mean Steven Gerrard's side need one point to go through. The Scots take on Young Boys, and will be hoping to avenge their sole loss in the competition thus far, having lost in Switzerland earlier this season.

Rangers need just a point to go through, while Porto and Feyenoord face off in a crunch clash. The Dragons need a win, or a draw if Young Boys lose, while Feyenoord need to win and will rely on Rangers to beat the Swiss side if they want to advance.

Rangers have earned big scalps to put themselves in the driving seat to advance. United, fielding a team consisting mostly of youngsters, went down to the Kazakhstan side rooted to the bottom of Group L, but are still in a firm position in the group. Manchester United's loss to FC Astana is the only blemish on a strong group record. A repeat result against AZ Alkmaar will seal qualification as group winners for the next round.

They host AZ Alkmaar at Old Trafford knowing that a win or a draw will seal their place at the top of the group and avoid the seeded teams dropping down from the Champions League, including Romelu Lukaku's Inter Milan.

However, should the Dutch side, who have also qualified for the next round, spring a surprise upset, United will advance in second place.

Manchester United have already qualified and are favourites to win their group. Wolves have defied the odds to dismiss the myth that Europa League football is the poisoned chalice that derails Premier League clubs. After a slow start to the domestic campaign, owing to numerous qualification games dating back to July, Nuno Espirito Santo's side have found their rhythm. The fact they have lost only four games in all competitions speaks volumes of their efforts thus far. Wolves have defied the odds to balance Europe and the Premier League this season.

Their draw with Braga on a sodden night in Portugal sealed qualification for the knockout rounds, but they need a win and results elsewhere to go their way if they want to win the group. Braga travel to Slovakia to take on a tough Bratislava side who held the Portuguese in the reverse fixture earlier this season. Wolves are without Raul Jimenez, who is suspended, and are likely to field a weaker team as they look ahead to a crunch clash with Spurs on Sunday.

Wolves need Braga to drop points if they want to seal first spot in their Europa League group. Celtic have the luxury of a dead rubber on Thursday night, having not only qualified but sealed their place as group winners.

Neil Lennon's side have been flawless this group stage, with their win away to Lazio one of their top results of the season. Celtic have been flawless in their Europa League journey and have qualified as group winners.

Owing to their strong performances, Celtic will avoid the likes of Inter, Ajax and Benfica in the Round of 32, as they will be seeded for Monday's draw. Should they perform as they did Rome, they will fear no opponent come February. Even in defeat Celtic will qualify as group winners and can look forward to the knockout stage. Argos AO. Until recently this wasn't the case, but since the winner of the Europa League has automatically qualified for the Champions League. But Manchester United will become the second team to take the European route to the Champions League if they beat Ajax. Who Manchester United could face in Europa League knockout stages

Manchester United 's sixth-placed finish in the Premier League guaranteed them a spot in the Europa League , but will they have to qualify for the group stages? Red Devils fans will find themselves compromised with wanting their Etihad rivals to win the FA Cup against Watford on Saturday, as such a result would impact their own Europa League campaign. Should Man City win their FA Cup final against Watford on Saturday, Wolves - who finished seventh in the league - would qualify for Europe for the first time since They would be granted entry in the second qualifying round of the Europa League, allowing United to enter the competition directly in the group stages. Having to participate in UEL qualification will cause further fixture congestion for United's already busy pre-season schedule. Should Watford win the FA Cup, Solskjer's side faces a conundrum as they will have to re-jig their pre-season commitments and either pull out of their ICC fixtures altogether, or potentially split their squad between China and Europe. They could also look into moving the fixture against Tottenham to Europe, though both teams are due to play in Singapore a few days later. Being required to play in the Europa League play-offs would be even more of a disappointment to Solskjaer, after the Red Devils spent most of the campaign fighting for a spot in the Champions League only to lose out on fourth place by five points.

With two English teams in the Champions League final, and another two in the Europa League final, we take a look at how European qualification in the Premier League has shaped up for next season. Wolves will have to play six matches before the end of August just to get to the group stage, with the Premier League getting under way on the weekend of Aug. The winners of the Champions League this season -- Liverpool or Tottenham -- have qualified for next season's competition via the league. This will have no effect on the number of Premier League teams in next season's draw, as the holders only take the place reserved for them if they need it. So, for instance, Liverpool winning the final does not mean fifth in the league also goes into the UCL.

They were the first English club to enter European competition, entering the European Cup in Since then, the club has competed in every UEFA-organised competition, with the exception of the now-defunct Intertoto Cup.
